These are my recommended books for writers that I’ve found useful. Whether you are just starting out or further along in your writing journey, they all contain good, down-to-earth advice.
This list is by no means comprehensive, but it’s a good place to start without getting overwhelmed with too much information. At the very least, if you are serious about writing, you should invest in the first one, The Elements of Style.
If your grammar is a bit shaky, get yourself a copy of The Elements of Style by Strunk and White. This little book has been recommended by many writers, because it is so good. A pocket book; it contains clear and concise instructions on grammar and style. Essential if you wish to pursue a career in writing.
For fiction writers, Stephen King’s On Writing – A Memoir of the Craft is an excellent book. It would be hard not to get anything from this book and much of Stephen’s advice stays with you. The very first piece of advice he gives is, ‘Read a lot and write a lot,’ and if you want to develop as a writer, it really is as simple as that.
