Unlocked – A Supernatural Thriller by S B Shannon
Thornton Place Children’s Home, East Barnet, London
5th January 1972
A single candle flickered on Anna Sutton’s desk. It cast a weak light in the room creating an eeriness over the faces of the already anxious staff. A stillness hung over the place; it had taken the best part of two hours to settle the children down after the day’s events. Now they were asleep, the tense atmosphere could be felt that much more.
Anna, who had been clutching her bible to her chest, now placed it on the desk and addressed her staff, breaking the silence.
“Let us pray,” she said.
The group with bowed heads and hands clasped together, followed Anna’s lead. They recited the Lord’s prayer in quiet voices. Then Anna opened her Bible and began to read. There was no eye contact between the group. Some had their eyes shut, while others stared at their hands or the floor. No-one wanted to see what they had seen in Anna’s eyes earlier. No-one wanted to feel that same stark terror. Anna spoke slowly, putting extra emphasis on certain words. Her voice was quiet, unsteady and her hands trembled slightly.
“He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.”
“Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.”
Anna closed the book then and crossed herself. The down-turned faces of her staff were scared and weary.
“We must be strong in our faith.” she told them as they left the room, but the day’s events and her own fear had shaken them to the core and they shuffled nervously into the corridor.
Anna quickly washed and changed into her night clothes before getting into bed. It was a routine that she followed every night and usually after prayers sleep came easily. Tonight though, she didn’t dare close her eyes. Not with the boy under the same roof.
