Finding Time to Write

Finding time to write is a common problem and yet we all have the same amount of time in a day. So, how do some writers seem to churn out the words endlessly while others can only manage a few?

Writing for money

Why write?
Why write?

Are you writing for money? Do you want to earn a living, eventually becoming a full-time writer?

To be a successful writer,¬† you will need a disciplined routine of writing every day¬†until it becomes automatic. Even on the days when you don’t feel like writing, you still need to sit at the keyboard and crack on.

What will you sacrifice?

What will you be prepared to sacrifice in order to find time to write? The biggest claim on most people’s spare time is television. If you can’t bear the thought of life without the old goggle box, cut down on your viewing instead. Ask yourself if you are watching TV for the sake of it? What do you actually get out of the programs you watch? Is it just habit?

News bulletins on television are fairly regular. It’s easy then to form a habit of watching every one. You could just read through the headlines on your mobile phone and skip the TV news altogether.

Make Use of Every Minute

Everyone has the same amount of time per day and often your spare time is broken into smaller chunks spread over the course of the day.

With only half an hour, twenty minutes or even ten minutes, you can still make use of that time to write. Typing at thirty words a minute, which is fairly slow and quite achievable, means you can get one thousand words down in half an hour.

Allowing for thinking time, turn it into one hour. Finding one hour of spare time should be doable for most people. One thousand words, every day for a month and you will have a 30,000-word novella!

Plan Your Writing

Plan your writing so you can make full use of any writing time. Spend some time at the beginning of each week to make a schedule of what you are going to write and when.

This thinking and planning time is as important as the writing itself. Once you have a detailed plan of what you are going to write about, it makes the whole process much easier.

Finding time to write doesn’t have to be an impossible task. As long as the desire is there and you are willing to put some planning work in you can find the time to write
